XP Installation problem (hardware suspected)
When the machine went to restart, the screen froze for a long time. I reset. When it came back, I had black screen....nothing. I powered down and back up, same thing, although the drives ran and their lights flashed, and I could hear the CPU fan. Concerned, I powered down, disconnected power and the IDE drives.

I wanted to install Win Me over it so I booted the machine with Win ME start up disk and tried to format the HD but didn't get any success. First thing I see is Toshibs loho and then curser blinks agains a black screen and after few seconds it boots to WIn ME which is installed on the machine.

I retried the installation in expert mode, but the result was the same. Sure they were.. My guess is your x config (basically like the video driver for windows) isn't working right and you probably told it to boot into X (bad move on a fresh install). Try starting in the mode that gives you a black screen.

Problems with WinXP installation
My V5 pci will not install. I do not get beyond the black screen, the monitor little light does not change from yellow to green. The whole system just hangs. I uninstalled by previous banshee, uninstalled the banshee controller. I changed the display adapter to standard VGA in the device manager.
